Pacifica is home to some of the San Francisco Bay Area’s best surfing beaches. One of the most popular beginner surfing spots is Linda Mar State Beach. This beach is a mile-long stretch on the north end of Pacifica, just north of picturesque Pedro Point. It’s well-liked by many as is known for being somewhat protected from the winds. The break at this surfer-friendly beach is usually fairly forgiving and, on a nice weekend the beach can attract a fair number of novice surfers. However, Linda Mar can also produce a challenging wave with a bigger swell for the more experienced. The outer peaks tend to be the best shaped and often produce the longest rides.
The event, produced by the Pedro Point Surf Club, brings hundreds of surfers and spectators together for a full day of beach fun and activities. Participants range in age from Menehunes as young as 6 years old, to Legends well into their seventies and eighties. 2021 marks a special year as it celebrates the 30th anniversary of the Big Chill Out surf competition. This awesome surfing event is due to take place at Linda Mar State Beach, Saturday, September 18, 2021.
The day's festivities continue as an evening awards banquet and raffle will take place. The evening's atmosphere will be filled with good cheer, great food, photos, and lots of community and surfer camaraderie.
So you don't surf but would like to be part of this annual event? The Pedro Point Surf Club seeks volunteers to assist with everything from set-up, breakdown, judging, and registration to food donations.
